Campbell County senior Austin Myers won his third national championship in the
220-pound weight class at the National High School Wrestling Championships held last weekend in Virginia Beach, Va.

Myers, who posted a perfect 182-0 record wrestling for Campbell County over the past four seasons, defeated Kenneth Brinson of Georgia, 8-5, in the 220-pound senior division national finals. In last year’s junior division finals, Brinson defeated Myers in that same weight class.

“It was kind of grudge match,” Myers said in an interview posted on the www.flowrestling.org website after this year’s championship match. “I think I’m the best in my weight class so I had to come out and prove it.”

This is the fourth consecutive year that Myers wrestled in the 220-pound weight class final at the national tournament that has separate divisions for freshmen, sophomores, junior and seniors. Myers won national titles in that weight class as a freshman and sophomore and then placed second as a junior.

He will continue his
wrestling career at the University of West Virginia.

Several other local high school wrestlers competed in this year’s national tournament. Casey Cornett of Simon Kenton placed second in the 182-pound weight class in the sophomore division and Ryan Moore of Walton-Verona placed seventh in the 113-pound weight class in the freshman division.
