Park Clean Up Days scheduled at several Kentucky State Parks in March and April


The Kentucky State Parks are looking for volunteers to help several parks during cleanup days in March and April.

The parks will need people to pick up litter on trails, clear fallen branches and perform other chores as parks prepare for spring and summer.

“All of our parks are getting ready for more guests, and this is one way people can help,” Parks Commissioner Elaine Walker said. “We invite anyone who cares about our state parks to come out and volunteer.”

Here is a list of some of the events planned in March and April. All times are local:

Jenny Wiley State Resort Park, Prestonsburg
Operation Clean Sweep, March 21
Volunteers will be cleaning up the shoreline of Dewey Lake. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the golf course parking lot. Free cookout at noon for volunteers. Call (606) 889-1790.

Buckhorn Lake State Resort Park, Buckhorn
Park Cleanup, March 28
Come out and get the park clean for the spring season. Trash pickup and debris disposal is the mission. Gloves and safety gear will be available throughout the weekend. Special snacks and refreshments will be provided on Saturday. Call (606) 398-7510.

Lake Cleanup, April 18
Spend the day cleaning up the lake area followed by a lunch for all participants.

Columbus-Belmont State Park, Columbus
Park Day, March 28
The park is participating in Park Day to clean up and preserve Civil War sites. Volunteers should meet at 9 a.m. at Shelter C in the picnic area of the park. Contact Cindy Lynch at (270) 677-2327.

Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, Corbin
PRIDE Cleanup, March 28
The cleanup along Highway 90 will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with registration starting at 9 a.m. at the park gift shop. Prizes and T-shirts will be given away, and a lunch will be provided to volunteers. Call (606) 677-6150.

Old Fort Harrod State Park, Harrodsburg
Pick Up the Park Day, March 28
Volunteers will pick up litter, sticks and leaves. The work will last from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are asked to bring rakes. Water and coffee will be provided. Call (859) 734-3314.

Green River Lake State Park, Campbellsville
Trail Maintenance Day, March 28
Volunteers will pick up litter and branches, complete trail sign installation and more. The work will begin 9 a.m. Lunch will be provided. Call (270) 465-8255.

Big Bone Lick State Historic Site, Union
Trail Work Days; April 11, May 9
Join the park interpreter and John Robbins from the Sierra Club for a day of hiking and trail maintenance at the park. If you enjoy hiking or want to perform a fun community service activity outdoors, this event is for you. For more information, call (859) 384-3522.

John James Audubon State Park, Henderson
Dirt Day, April 25
Volunteers will continue the tradition of preparing the Museum Gardens for spring, cleaning up the Coffeetree Trail after a winter of hard weather and planting in the new butterfly way station behind the museum between 8:30 a.m. and noon. All volunteers will receive a T-shirt. Lunch will be provided. Call (270) 826-2247.

Dawkins Line Rail Trail, Johnson and Magoffin counties
Trail Cleanup, April 25
Volunteers can meet at the Swamp Branch or Sublett trailheads to clean up the trail from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Gloves and trash bags will be provided.
