Bellevue could name its new head football coach next week, according to Jim Hicks, the high school’s athletic director.

Johnny Poynter, head coach of the Tigers the last two seasons, resigned in March and has been hired as the head football coach at Bath County. Bellevue finished 7-5 and won one game in the Class 1A playoffs in each of its two seasons under Poynter.

Hicks said interviews for the vacant coaching position were still being conducted this week and the administration “is hoping to name a coach by the middle of next week.”

Bellevue will compete in a Class 1A district with Beechwood, Dayton and Ludlow next season. Hicks said most of the returning football players compete in other sports during the spring and do their off-season weight training with those teams.

The Conner fast-pitch softball team and Covington Catholic baseball team both lost their first games of the season on Thursday.

In softball, Ryle edged Conner, 5-4, to hand the Cougars their first loss after starting the season with 11 straight wins. The score was tied, 4-4, going into the final inning when rain began to fall. Ryle scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

Last year, Ryle defeated Conner twice during the regular season, but Conner eliminated Ryle in the district playoffs.

The CovCath baseball team that got off to a 10-0 start this season lost to Glen Este of Ohio, 7-4, in the pool play round of the Doc Morris Invitational. It was the most runs given up by the Colonels in their first 11 games.

The Doc Morris Invitational will continue through out the weekend with games scheduled at Campbell County, Dixie Heights, Scott, Simon Kenton and Ryle high schools as well as Pioneer Park.

Proceeds from the tournament provide scholarships for former Northern Kentucky high school baseball players and family members of coaches.
