The annual Night Out, part of National Public Works Week, provides an opportunity to raise awareness and recognize the impact the Public Services staff has on the community.

Eric Hall, City of Florence Public Services Director, said the event has become increasingly popular over the years.

“This is an opportunity for us to display the various pieces of equipment in the city’s fleet and interact with the people and business owners in the community.” Hall said.

National Public Works week is underway at communities across the country from May 17 through May 23.

The Florence event included free ballpark style food and drinks prepared by city employees and local merchants and live demonstrations of equipment used on a daily basis by the City’s Public Services Department.

Equipment horns blared periodically throughout the parking lot during the event as children were permitted to climb into and on top of the vehicles under the supervision of parents and city employees.

Jean Jordan has lived in Burlington for the last 12 years and said her children, Lauren Jordan, 9 and Joseph Jordan, 7 look forward to the Night Out each year. As she spoke, here children were being raised high above the parking lot while inside a bucket attached to a city vehicle.

“The kids really love checking out the equipment, the food, and they love riding in that bucket, too,” Jordan said.

Similar events took place in the parking lot of the Boone County Administration Building and in other Northern Kentucky communities throughout Public Works week.
