Northern Kentucky University’s Cole Bauml was named to the 2015 Academic All-Atlantic Sun Conference team, the league office announced.
Bauml finished his senior season leading the team with a .350 batting average after going 2-for-4 against Lipscomb on Saturday in his final collegiate game. His 25 doubles ranked fifth nationally and landed just one shy of tying the school record of 26, which was set by Jason Cisper in 2010. He averaged 0.60 doubles per game, and that would have led the country if NKU players were able to be included in the national statistics as a reclassifying institution.
In addition to his performance on the field, Bauml has also worked hard in the classroom. He held a 3.33 grade point through the fall semester as an organizational leadership major.
“Not only has Cole been a leader on the field for us this season, but he has also been a leader in the classroom,” NKU head coach Todd Asalon said. “Cole’s hard work and dedication to both his academics and athletic performance really shined through this year. He has represented what it means to be a student-athlete very well. We are excited that his efforts are being rewarded, and we are very pleased with what he has accomplished in his two seasons with us.”
He posted a .663 slugging percentage to land in the top 20 nationally and was second in the Atlantic Sun. His .445 on-base percentage ranks third in the conference, and he hit eight home runs, which was fifth in the league.
The outfielder from Muenster, Saskatchewan, led the team in several offensive categories, including hits (57), runs scored (34) and total bases (108). He successfully stole 14 bases in 15 tries, and he drove in 22 runs for the Norse this season. Bauml finished his senior season with a .991 fielding percentage in center field.
Over his two year career with the Norse, he saw action in 87 games and earned 85 starts, including each of the 41 games he appeared in as a senior. He recorded a .343 batting average to go along with 43 doubles, 15 home runs and two triples. He collected 60 RBIs and 63 runs scored, and he stole 21 bases in 26 attempts.
The Atlantic Sun introduced the new sport-by-sport academic all-conference teams in the 2011-12 academic year to recognize student-athletes who embody the conference’s mission of Building Winners for Life. All the members of the team boast a 3.30 GPA or better and participated in at least half of their team’s games.
Softball coaching change for Norse
Northern Kentucky Director of Athletics Ken Bothof has announced that Kathy Stewart will not be retained as head coach of the Norse softball program.
“Following a thorough review of the softball program over the last two years, I have decided a change in leadership is necessary,” said Bothof. “I want to thank Kathy for her dedication to Norse softball.”
“Kathy devoted much of herself to the softball program and the student-athletes during her tenure at NKU,” said Associate Athletic Director and softball sport supervisor Chris Hafling. “We wish Kathy well.”
A national search for the vacancy will begin immediately.
