Northern Kentucky teams swept the Class 1A titles in the high school track and field state championship meet on Saturday at the University of Kentucky. St. Henry finished on top on the girls’ team standings and Bishop Brossart scored the most points in boys’ events.

St. Henry carried off the girls’ championship trophy for the fourth straight year after edging Murray, 91-90, for first place in the team standings. The Crusaders’  individual winners were Tina Felix in the 100 hurdles and Samantha Hentz in the 800 run. Hentz was also a member of St. Henry’s 4×400 relay team that placed first in the final race on the schedule to clinch the team title.

Brossart also won three events in the girls’ state meet. The Mustangs opened the competition with a victory in the 4×800 relay and Nicole Goderweis earned gold medals in the 200 and 400 dashes. Goderweis set a Class A state record in the girls’ 400 dash with a time of 56.95.

The Brossart boys’ team claimed its first state title since 2007 with a final score of 70 points. Murray took second place with 60 points. The Mustangs won the 4×800 and 4×400 relays and Gabe Roberts placed first  in the triple jump, but most of the team’s points came from placing well in several other events.

Villa Madonna senior Eric Baugh was one of the top individual scorers in the boys’ state meet. He won the 800 and 1600 runs for the second straight year and placed third in the 3200 run to account for 26 of his team’s 34 points.

The Class 3A state championship meet was also held on Saturday at UK, but no local athletes won events in either the boys’ or girls’ competition. The meet’s second-place finishers included Zachary Stewart of Cooper in the boys’ 3200 run, Rebecca Cline of Campbell County in the girls’ 300 hurdles and Jenna Doellman of Boone County in the girls’ high jump.
