Ports of Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky to be re-designated, expanded to include 15 counties

Dedication of the Re-designated Ports of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, hosted by the Central Ohio River Business Association (CORBA) will be held Thursday at 5:00 p.m. at the Metropolitan Club in Covington.

Now officially known as the “Ports of Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky,” the port district includes a 226.5-mile reach of the Ohio River, plus a seven-mile reach of the Licking River. The district includes all or part of 15 counties in Kentucky and Ohio.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will include all of 15 counties that supported the re-designation.

Joining Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky’s Fourth Congressional District will be Ohio and Kentucky local and state elected officials as well as representatives from the region’s maritime businesses, economic development sector, the region’s government officials, and more as we celebrate this exciting event for the region.

Previously, the Port of Cincinnati covered just a 26-mile corridor, and about 12 million tons of cargo moved over the port’s docks per year; the district was ranked as the 51st largest port in the United States.

With the new boundaries, the expanded port district will move about 48 million tons, ranking it 15th among all U.S. ports and No. 2 among U.S. inland ports, behind only the Port of Huntington Tri-State, which underwent a similar statistical expansion several years ago.

This official designation by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers resulted from an unprecedented, multi-jurisdictional collaboration, which truly defines ‘regionalism’,” said CORBA co-founder Eric Thomas. “It is now up to CORBA, through collaboration with its members and all the jurisdictions up and down the reach of the central Ohio River that make up the new Ports of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky to unleash that marketing potential, and to capitalize on the momentum from this momentous event to the good of the entire region.”
