Stephens shuts down Frontier as Freedom capture fourth straight win to open season


For the second straight season, the Florence Freedom are 4-0.

Starter Coleman Stephens (2-0) shut down the Frontier Greys (0-3) to earn his second victory of the season and allow the Freedom to remain undefeated in a 5-1 victory over the Greys Tuesday night.

Stephens fired eight scoreless innings allowing three hits while fanning seven. Stephens picked up his second victory of the season.

Florence got on the board in the bottom of the first. Austin Newell led off the frame with a walk, Jake Luce followed with a walk to put runners on first and second. Sam Eberle loaded the bases with a single. After Cody Bishop popped out for out number one and Newell was thrown out at the plate for out number two, Ryan Solberg walked to reload the bases.

Michael Pair picked up an RBI the easy way, drawing a walk to put the Freedom up 1-0 after one. The Freedom drew a total of seven walks in the game.

Florence doubled its advantage in the third. Bishop walked with one out and stole second to put himself in scoring position. Pair picked up his second RBI of the day, doubling to left to score Bishop and give the Freedom a 2-0 lead after three.

The Freedom tacked on another run in the fifth. Sam Eberle singled and moved to second on a throwing error. Ryan Solberg picked up his first RBI of the season by singling to center to score Eberle. Florence led 3-0 after five frames.

Florence padded their lead in the seventh. Jake Luce led off with a double and stole third to put himself ninety feet from Florence’s fourth run of the game. Sam Eberle lifted a fly ball to left field that was deep enough to score Luce and give Florence a 4-0 lead after seven innings.

The Freedom tallied their final run of the ballgame in the eighth. Daniel Fraga started the threat with a two out single. Austin Newell kept the frame alive with a single to put runners on first and second. Fraga come around to score on a Jake Luce single to give the Freedom a 5-0 advantage.
