Thomas More’s Walter named to All-Central Region team; Luck earns All-Academic recognition


Thomas More College junior shortstop Ana Walter (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) was named All-Central Region by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).

Walter was a third-team selection by the NFCA after she led the team at the plate with a .359 batting average. Walter was 52-for-145 at the plate with one home run, two triples, 18 doubles, 19 runs batted-in and 39 runs scored.

She had a .531 slugging percentage to go with a .429 on-base percentage and a .927 fielding percentage. Walter was seven-for-10 in stolen base attempts.

Walter and the Saints finished the season with a 27-17 record, including a 13-5 mark in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC).

The team shared the PAC regular-season and won the PAC Championship Tournament where it advanced to the NCAA’s Greencastle, Indiana Regional and posted a 1-2 record.

Thomas More College senior center fielder Catie Luck (Maineville, Ohio/Little Miami) was named to the Capital One Academic All-District II Softball team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Luck, a three-time team captain, carries a 3.806 grade point average in physics. She is also Thomas More’s Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Luck volunteers with the Brighton Center, Special Olympics, at the Ronald McDonald House and has judged the science and engineering fair of Northern Kentucky for the past two years. She is a member of the Math and Physics Club at Thomas More.

After graduating this week from Thomas More, Luck will attend the University of Buffalo on a full ride scholarship for a PhD in Physics.

On the diamond this season, she batted .248 as she was 26-for-105 with two home runs, two triples, seven doubles, 16 runs batted-in and 26 runs scored. She had a .410 slugging percentage and a .960 fielding percentage.

By virtue of making the Academic All-District II team, Luck advances to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot.

To be selected Academic All-District, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve with at least a 3.30 GPA.

The Academic All-District teams are voted on by Sports Information Directors within a district and the member of the CoSIDA Academic All-America committee voting on the national ballot. District II includes every NCAA Division III institution in Kentucky, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island and West Virginia.

Pogue selected Presidents’ Conference Player of Year

Thomas More College junior designated hitter Donovan Pogue (Sharonville, Ohio/St. Xavier) was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Player of the Year and 11 Saints were named All-PAC by the conference’s nine head coaches.

Pogue led the team in batting with a .450 average a he was 67-of-149 at the plate. He had a team-leading seven home runs and 55 runs batted-in and 13 doubles to go with 25 base-on-balls with a .678 slugging percentage and a .538 on-base percentage.

Pogue was also named first team All-PAC along with freshman second baseman Ben Laumann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) and sophomore right fielder Ben Kenning (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder). Laumann batted .358 as he was 37-of-105 with one home run, nine doubles and 21 RBI to go with a .444 on-base percentage and a .467 slugging percentage. Kenning was second on the team in batting with a .402 average as he was 68-of-169 with 49 RBI, two home runs, two triples and 13 doubles. He had a .538 slugging percentage and a .944 fielding percentage.

Senior first baseman Nick Connor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder), junior pitcher Logan Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) and junior pitcher Brandon Humphrey (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) were named second team All-PAC. Connor was third on the team in batting with a .373 average as he was 62-of-166 with two home runs 19 doubles and 28 RBI to go with a .524 slugging percentage and a .990 fielding percentage. Miller had a 2.64 earned run average and a 6-2 record in 61.1 innings pitched. He had two complete games and 29 strike outs. Humphrey had a team-leading 1.95 ERA and a 6-1 record with four complete games in 60 innings pitched. He had a team-best 46 strike outs and gave up only 23 runs with 13 earned.

Freshman third baseman Bailey Abbatiello (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle), sophomore center fielder Casey Metzger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills), junior left fielder Zach Fardo (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart), senior catcher Brad Popham (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) and sophomore pitcher Ken Ruberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) were named honorable mention All-PAC.

Abbatiello had a .318 batting average with two home runs, one triple, 11 doubles and 25 RBI. Metzger had a .331 average with three triples, eight doubles and 29 RBI. Fardo hit .311 with two home runs, seven doubles, 32 RBI and 27 runs scored. Popham hit .314 with two triples, 12 doubles, 28 RBI and had .972 fielding percentage behind the plate. Ruberg set a single-season school record with 23 appearances and had a 2.58 ERA with a 4-2 record to go with six saves in 38.1 innings pitched.

The Saints finished the season with a 30-12 record, including an 18-6 mark in the PAC. Thomas More won the PAC regular-season and finished runner-up in the PAC Championship Tournament.
