Cold Spring turns 75 years old next year, and the city is planning to celebrate that anniversary in style. To do so, event planners are asking for help from residents, past and present, in collecting information and artifacts of the city’s history.
Of particular interest at this point is finding a way to verify the existence of a time capsule that was potentially buried in 1951.
“Is there one, if so, where is it, and if not we are looking to create one,” said Lisa Cavanaugh, city council member and event organizer. “It’s a big mystery. If people could start asking around, that would help. We want to find it, see what’s in it, and add to it – or do one.”
Cavanaugh said the plans are to have an event in June of 2016.
Events to be held for the jubilee are still under very preliminary discussions, but Cavanaugh wants to recognize residents in some way, such as possibly the oldest resident or some of the founding families of Cold Spring.
Settlement of the area dates back to the post-Revolutionary period, and the city’s name comes from a natural cold spring that provided water for settlers and travelers, although it is uncertain where the original cold spring is located.
In addition to information about the city and its past, Cavanaugh is also interested in pictures and videos, especially videos from some of the city’s more senior residents sharing stories about the city’s past.
“The city needs something to be excited about,” Cavanaugh said. “Right now, I just want people to know I’m looking for this, and to go through old boxes on rainy days.”
She won’t begin actively collecting items or pictures until the end of the year, or the first part of 2016.
