Gateway Community and Technical College will offer two free hands-on career exploration camps this July for high school girls and middle school students.
“The camps are part of our ongoing efforts to expose students to exciting careers in advanced manufacturing,” said Carissa Schutzman, Gateway Dean of Workforce Solutions. “The camps demonstrate to students that making stuff is cool and that the words ‘American made’ convey not only a sense of pride but an opportunity for a rewarding career in a clean, mentally challenging environment.”
The Engineering/Advanced Manufacturing Camp for high school girls will explore the high-tech, high-wage careers available in advanced manufacturing. Participants will rotate through hands-on activities as they work in teams to solve problems and learn the fundamentals of lean manufacturing. They will also take a tour of the Bosch Automotive Steering plant to see a high-tech facility up close. Thecamp takes place July 20-22 at Gateway Community and Technical College’s Boone Campus. July 20 & 22, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and July 21, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
The camp will be coordinated with the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce STEM Girls Day Out, presented by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Girls participating in Gateway’s advanced manufacturing camp are invited to attend the STEM Girls Day Out event on Thursday, July 23 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The Supply Chain Camp for all middle school students will explore the high-tech and high-wage careers in the supply chain sector. Participants will rotate through hands-on activities as they work in teams to solve problems and learn the fundamentals of lean, and how to apply then to logistics. They will also take a tour of the FedEx facility to see supply chain in action. This camp takes place July 27-29 at Gateway Community and Technical College’s Boone Campus. July 27 & 29, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. and July 28, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
“Today’s advanced manufacturing and logistics careers pay well, offer good benefits and provide a reliable source of income to both women and men,” Michelle Flick, Workforce Transitions Coordinator, said. “Local manufacturers are hiring now and for the foreseeable future. We’re pleased to support these efforts to introduce young people to the advantages of manufacturing and logistics careers.”
