Gateway VP’s of academic affairs, Corporate College and administrative and business affairs get to work

Teri VonHandorf, Carissa Schutzman and James Younger will begin their new roles as vice president at Gateway Community and Technical College effective today.

VonHandorf is the new VP of academic affairs.

“Dr. VonHandorf is recognized expert in the area of developmental education, has led the effort to increase pathways between Gateway and four-year institutions and has provided leadership at Gateway for 13 years,” said G. Edward Hughes, Gateway president and CEO. “I am looking forward to the vision she will bring to academic affairs as she serves our students in this new role.”

As associate provost for academic affairs, VonHandorf successfully led initiatives to redesign developmental education, improve the course scheduling process and expand dual credit opportunities. She has served on numerous academic committees with Kentucky Community and Technical College System and oversees academic programming for the General Education, Developmental Education and Protective and Professional Services Divisions. Prior to this position, she served Gateway as the division chair of Interdisciplinary Studies and assistant professor of developmental mathematics.

“I am beyond excited to serve Gateway as the vice president of academic affairs,” said VonHandorf. “I have witnessed tremendous growth and transformation in my tenure at Gateway. I’m looking forward to working with our five new academic deans and the dean of enrollment services to serve current and future students, and the needs of our community. It is a very exciting time to be part of Gateway, and I am honored to serve in this leadership capacity.”

VonHandorf’s position will replace the role of provost previously held by Sister Margaret Stallmeyer, as she retires.

Under VonHandorf’s leadership are six deans who will also assume leadership within academic affairs today.

‣ Susan Santos – dean of Arts and Sciences
‣ Amy Carrino – dean of Business, IT and Professional Studies
‣ Andre Washington – dean of Enrollment Services
‣ Amber Carter – dean of Health Professions
‣ Dee Wright – dean of Manufacturing and Engineering
‣ Sam Collier – dean of Transportation Technologies

Carissa Schutzman is the new VP of Corporate College at Gateway.

“Carissa is well-respected within the business and education communities,” said Hughes. “She has been instrumental in leading the college’s efforts to join secondary students and those seeking employment with the local manufacturing industry to create a pipeline of potential employees to address the shortage of talent in the advanced manufacturing sector. She will continue this work and expand relationships with the business community to address their employment needs as the leader of Gateway’s Corporate College.”

As dean of Workforce Solutions at Gateway, Schutzman worked with local businesses to create customized training for incumbent workers and helped develop a pipeline of employees for companies by marketing, recruiting and engaging potential employees and students. She also supervised the workforce development liaisons and guided the sales of training contracts and the convening of various employer groups. Schutzman also supervised the work of the workforce transitions coordinator and the Raise the Floor coordinator whose work included STEM days and camps, apprenticeship programs, and special initiatives to recruit high school students and women into advanced manufacturing. Prior to this position, she served as division chair of the Developmental Education and Orientation to College Division and was an assistant professor in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Division at Gateway.

“I am very excited about my new leadership role as our Workforce Solutions division evolves into the Gateway Corporate College. Our team has enjoyed national recognition for its innovative work, and we will continue in that tradition of innovation as we develop and expand our services,” said Schutzman. “I am thrilled and honored to serve as the vice president. Gateway is an integral part of workforce development initiatives in our region, and the Corporate College is poised to enhance existing partnerships with business and industry and forge new relationships. I think it is an exciting time for Gateway and for northern Kentucky.”

Schutzman’s position will replace the role of vice president of Workforce Solutions previously held by Angie Taylor, as she retires.

Younger is the new VP for administrative and business affairs.

“Jamie has been an emerging leader in the college and is well regarded as an exceptional professional within higher education community,” said Hughes. “We are very fortunate to have him moving into this role as we navigate challenging times in higher education funding in Kentucky and the nation. He is a thought leader focused on creating new ways to bring resources to support students.”

As dean of business affairs, Younger planned and built consensus for the 35 million dollar Gateway budget and was responsible for leadership of financial planning, revenue forecasting, and long-and- short-term budget requirements for the college. Younger and his team earned the Kentucky Community and Technical College System Budget and Financial Planning Excellence Award in 2013, 2014, 2015 and the Budget Best Practice Award in 2013, 2014. Prior to his position at Gateway, he was the director of financial planning at KCTCS, and budget and financial analyst for the Commonwealth of Kentucky in Frankfort.

“I am excited about the opportunity to work with the professional faculty and staff at Gateway,” said James Younger. “Together we will serve current and future students to enhance their future, and the economic vitality of the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati region.”

Younger is filling the role previously held by Mike Baker, who will now oversee safety and facilities, including all capital construction projects, as special assistant to the president.
