Northern Kentucky women’s golf schedule has strong regional flavor, spring home tourney

The 2015-16 Northern Kentucky women’s golf schedule features tournaments hosted by regional opponents of the Norse, including Youngstown State, Ball State, Cincinnati, Dayton, Evansville, Butler, Morehead State, Eastern Kentucky and Bowling Green this fall and spring.

“The local tournaments are great for our players,” said head coach Daryl Landrum. “Not only is travel time reduced for our student-athletes, but it also makes it easier for parents and fans to support the team.”

Elks Run Golf Club in Batavia, Ohio will serve as the course for a dual with Dayton.

This marks the first event hosted by Northern Kentucky as a Division I program. The last time the Norse held an event was the NKU Spring Invitational on March 24-25, 2012.

The first true tournament of the season will be Ball State’s Cardinal Classic, held in Yorktown, Indiana. The Players Club, which is the home course for Tara Clark, will host the event on from Sept. 21-22.

Local foes Cincinnati and Dayton are holding consecutive tournaments in which the Norse will compete. The Bearcat Fall Classic will be held Oct. 5-6 in Maineville, Ohio, while the Dayton Fall Invitational is slated for Oct. 19-20. In last season’s Dayton Fall Invite, the Norse made a final-round surge to earn a share of fifth in the 16-team field.

Northern Kentucky will wrap up fall competition in the Charles Braun Intercollegiate sponsored by Evansville in Evansville, Indiana, on Oct. 26-27. Sarah Kellam won the event last season, becoming the first Norse to win a Division I tournament, helping NKU finish second.

A five-tournament spring slate opens with consecutive events in Jacksonville, Florida, which will be hosted by Butler over NKU’s spring break. The Benbow Invitational is scheduled for March 7-8 and will be immediately followed by the Bulldog Florida Invitational on March 9-10.

A return to the Sunshine State for the MSU Ocala Spring Invitational is in store for the Norse from March 20-22. Morehead State is holding the event in Ocala, Florida, at the Juliette Falls Golf Course.

Trips to Richmond for the EKU Colonel Classic (April 1-2) and Bowling Green, Ohio, for the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational (April 9-10) conclude the spring tournaments for the Norse and prepare them for the league tournament.

Northern Kentucky’s spring season finishes with its first Horizon League Championship, which is scheduled for April 22-24 in Orlando, Florida.
