Kentucky is a state defined by its history and noted for a number of things, not the least of which is horse racing, bourbon, bluegrass music and barbecue.

But, as natives Bob Shrader and Matt Hilton remind us each week, there’s so much more to the Bluegrass State and its people, culture and rural charm. Shrader and Hilton combine their talents to produce the award-winning Bluegrass & Backroads, a 30-minute program aired regionally on the Kentucky Education Television networks and nationally via satellite on RFD-TV through Dish Network, DirecTV and several major cable outlets.

The long-running series features festivals, unique businesses, tourism sites, crafters and more within the state’s four distinct regions. It is produced at the Kentucky Farm Bureau state headquarters in Louisville.

In the episode below, Shrader and Hilton take you to West End School, a free, private, college preparatory elementary and middle school for at-risk young men in Louisville. Admission is open to boys entering pre-kindergarten, through second-grade, or entering sixth grade and who are on free or reduced lunch, are capable of doing academic work at grade level or above, and who would benefit from a safe environment and high expectations.
