CornBelters limit Freedom to just eight singles, turn a trio of double plays in shutout win


The Florence Freedom dropped a 2-0 decision to the Normal CornBelters at the Corn Crib on Tuesday.

Florence starter Chuck Weaver (5-4) was the hard luck loser, tossing seven innings and allowing only two runs. Weaver walked none and fanned six for the Freedom.

Normal scored its only two runs of the game in the bottom half of the first. Mark Micowski singled and moved to third on a single by Santiago Chirino. Chirino promptly stole second to put himself in scoring position.

Aaron Dudley lined a single into center that drove in Micowski and Chirino. Normal led 2-0 after one inning.

Florence squandered its chances at the plate, grounding into three double plays and stranding eight men on base. Florence had runners on in seven of the nine innings but failed to convert. All eight of the Freedom’s hits were singles.

Austin Delmotte was called upon out of the bullpen. The rookie tossed a scoreless eighth inning while striking out one
