Want to change a child’s life and make a meaningful contribution?
Polly Lusk Page, executive director of the Northern Kentucky Education Council says one way to do that is to become a volunteer reading or math Coach through a proven program called “One to One.”
One to One: Practicing Reading and Math with Students needs business and community volunteers to play an integral role in helping young students who struggle with those subjects.
“Our community has the power to change young lives and invest in the future of our region,” says Polly Lusk Page, Executive Director, Northern Kentucky Education Council. “Third-grade reading and math are key indicators for subsequent academic performance and career readiness. One to One provides a tangible means for volunteers to contribute to that process and make a difference.”
One to One requires new coaches to complete coach training and a background check. Coaches will learn how to provide the extra support students need to be successful in school.
Each volunteer coach will commit to meet with a 1st-3rd grade student just 35 minutes a week during the 2015-16 academic year.
Coaches provide children with the time, attention, and the opportunity to practice reading or math which will make a difference in their lives now and in the future.
Data indicate that there are approximately 2,400 children who could benefit from having extra time to practice reading or math. More community and business volunteers are needed to become coaches at the 42 participating schools in Northern Kentucky.
One to One has a proven track record of measurable success with over 88% of children who have been coached achieve documented continuous progress/growth in reading and math achievement.
