Norse women use balanced attack, match single-game goal record in shutout victory


The Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team closed its first weekend of the regular season with another dominant victory, cruising to a 6-0 shutout over Eastern Illinois on Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

The Norse posted a trio of goals in the first half and never looked back, out-shooting the Panthers 26-3 and 19-2 on goal. NKU’s 19 shots on goal is good for a new Division I benchmark, while six goals in a single game is tied for the most in the Division I era.

Hamblin’s goal came in the 29th minute for a 2-0 lead. Redshirt seniors Kelsey Laumann and Kelsey Zwergel picked up the assists.

NKU’s young talent shined in the victory as Samantha Duwel was the first of three freshman to score her first collegiate goal, coming on a double assist from senior Hanna Pateryn and freshman Brianna Frondorf with 27 seconds remaining in the first half.

An unassisted goal from Frondorf extended the NKU lead before freshman Erin Sutton rebounded a blocked shot for NKU’s fifth goal in the 80th minute. She was assisted by freshman Rachel Conaway and senior Casey McMillan, who paired up again for the final goal of the day in the 85th minute, scored by McMillan.

NKU is back in action when it travels to Charleston, S.C. for a pair of games, starting with a match against The Citadel on Friday, Aug. 28 at 5:30 p.m.

NORSE NOTES:

• Thirteen different Norse posted at least one shot in the contest.

• Hamblin led in shots with eight, including six on goal. She managed four of her shots on goal in the first 12 minutes.

• Between the opening pair of games, Frey totaled six points (three goals). Hamblin followed with five points (one goal, three assists).

• The Norse have out-shot their first two opponents 56-13 overall and 28-6 on goal.

In NKU’s season-opener on Friday, sophomore forward Jessica Frey led the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team with two goals as the Norse defeated IPFW, 3-1, at NKU Soccer Stadium to open the 2015 season.

The Norse out-shot the Mastodons 30-10 overall, with 19 of their shots coming in the first half. Northern Kentucky’s 30 shots are the most attempted by the Norse in a game at the Division I level.

NKU pulled ahead early, netting its first goal in the third minute when Frey fired a shot past IPFW’s Kiley Dunning into the far left corner of the net. Frey was assisted by sophomore forward Macy Hamblin and redshirt senior forward Kelsey Laumann. The goal was Hambiln’s first of three assists on the night.

The early 1-0 advantage stuck at the half.

NKU expanded its lead in the second half with a pair of one-touch goals, the first coming in the 48th minute when Hamblin and Frey paired up again. Freshman Payton Naylor set up the scoring attack, serving it ahead for Hamblin. Frey took a cross from Hamblin in front of the net and headed the ball in for a 2-0 edge.

The Norse quickly added to the lead when Laumann scored a goal of her own after tapping it in on a double assist from Hamblin and Sami Rutowski in the 55th minute. From the close left wing, Rutowski served it in the air through the box, before Laumann fired it in to the lower left corner.

IPFW spoiled the shutout bid in the 66th minute when IPFW’s Rachel Good dribbled into the offensive third and kicked it out to Kallianne Mogler for the Mastodon’s lone goal.
