
The Northern Kentucky Workforce Investment Board (NKWIB) presented its fourth annual WIA Awards at the Kentucky Career Center in Covington Tuesday.
The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Awards recognized the outstanding achievements, hard work, and participation on behalf of the area’s dislocated workers, youths, and employers.
Barbara Stewart, director of the NKWIB said the awards event is the culmination of hard work and strategic programming that showcases job seekers and employers.

“Training and education prepares job seekers to perform their job duties, while employers gain the qualified workforce they need,” Stewart said. “As Advanced Manufacturing impacts Northern Kentucky in a big way it is important to recognize the companies and job seekers who will rise to meet the challenge of fulfilling current and future positions. The NKWIB along with our community partners, and the Kentucky Career Center system will continue to work together to impact the quality of life in our region.”
Award recipients, with a brief description of their contributions:
Chris Reinersman and DHL were recognized as Outstanding Workforce Collaboration award winner. Reinersman and DHL’s collaboration and support of the WIB highlights the importance of community businesses working with their local WIB to prepare and educate job seekers for employment.
“DHL and Chris have partnered with the KY Career Center to utilize and promote the Center’s services. DHL brings jobs to Northern Kentucky through job fairs, group tours, and education.”

The WIB recognized Mark Freudenberg as its Employee of the Year for his dedication and leadership to coworkers, partners, and businesses. His stellar example of commitment and involvement in the Career Center operations makes Mark worthy of high recognition.
“Mark is recognized for his outstanding customer service and exemplary leadership.”
Keith Jones was recognized as the Dislocated Worker Alumnus. Jones is attending NKU to earn his bachelor’s degree in social work while working for the WIA/Career Connections.
“Keith earned his degree in social work. He is part of the Brighton Center’s Career Connections Program where he helps others achieve their dreams.”
Austin Crowell was recognized as the Alumnus Youth. Crowell is currently earning his Bachelors of Science in nursing at the University of Louisville. Upon completion of his degree he will pursue the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist doctorate.
“Austin is attending the University of Louisville where he will earn his Bachelors of Science degree in nursing and his Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist doctorate. Austin spends his summers working at Carroll County Memorial Hospital as an ER Tech.”
The Outstanding Career Center Alumnus is Angel Merkel. Merkel encountered many barriers to school and work and has risen above them to succeed in both. She is successfully employed with Cengage Learning in Florence, and her coworkers say Angel is an efficient and conscientious worker.
“Angel worked hard in school to rise above challenges to graduate and get a job where fellow employees praise her hard work, and fortitude.
