Calipari will be on hand to conduct post-position draw for top Breeders’ Cup races


University of Kentucky Men’s Basketball Coach John Calipari will draw post positions for two races at the Breeders’ Cup Post-Positon Draw at Keeneland Race Course on Monday, Oct. 26.

Tickets are free for the first 2,000 guests who complete ticket application.

The Breeders’ Cup, Thoroughbred racing’s most prestigious international two-day event, consisting of 13 races and $26 million in purses and awards, will be held for the first time at Keeneland in Lexington on Oct. 30-31.

Calipari will draw the post positions for the $2 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, for fillies and mares, 3-years-old and up, and for the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, for 3-year-olds and up, which is expected to include Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the field.

Calipari led the Wildcats to the 2012 NCAA Tournament title and was recently inducted to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

“We’re delighted to have Coach Cal draw this year’s Distaff and Classic, and greatly appreciate the support from UK Athletics,” said Robert N. Elliston, Breeders’ Cup Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “It’s terrific that we can bring together two of the greatest sporting traditions of the Commonwealth, majestic Thoroughbreds and UK Basketball, for this year’s World Championships.”

The Breeders’ Cup Post-Position Draw reception will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Maker’s Mark Bourbon Lounge, located at the top of the stretch near the Gate 2 entrance. The draws for the Distaff and Classic will begin at approximately 6:00 p.m. Tickets for the Post-Position Draw are available at www.BreedersCup.com/draw.

The post positon draw for the first 11 Breeders’ Cup races will be held earlier in the day at 1 p.m. in the Keeneland Sales Pavilion.

The Breeders’ Cup administers the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, Thoroughbred racing’s year-end Championships. The Breeders’ Cup also administers the Breeders’ Cup Challenge qualifying series, which provides automatic starting positions into the Championships races. The 2015 Breeders’ Cup World Championships, consisting of 13 grade I races and purses totaling $26 million, will be held Oct. 30-31 at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., and will be televised live by the NBC Sports Group.
