Staff Report

Life Learning Center in Covington is opening its doors for its first Halloween event in its 230-person meeting space, aiming to provide a safe place for parents and children to spend quality time for Halloween — and to see a free movie too.

On October 30, LLC will offer a Trick or Treat Tour from 3:30-4:30 p.m. where its community partners will distribute goodies and vote for the best Halloween costume. The feature film will begin at 4:30.

The Life Learning Center has been in its new space at 20 W. 18th Street for almost a year and, says Rosemary Oglesby-Henry, director of enrollment, are aiming to be a beacon of hope in the community — “a place that inspires change.”

For Halloween, LLC simply wants to provide a safe place for parents to bring children — and to provide families with a movie in a move-theater setting at the center, which they might not otherwise be able to afford.

The actual movie is still to be determined. Voters on Facebook can choose from 1 of 5 films: Halloweentown, Hocus Pocus, Casper, Monster House and Hotel Transylvania.

All community agencies, childcare centers, parents and children in the metropolitan area are invited to attend, though space is limited to the first 150 individuals who sign up.

RSVP via eventbrite — Monsters! A Movie & A Mission — or by calling Life Learning Center at 859.431.0100 before October 29.

Life Learning Center is a privately-funded nonprofit founded by William Butler of Corporex in 2006 in response to the city’s growing epidemic of homelessness and as a long-term solution to poverty and the reduction of generational poverty.

The organization provides a 16-week program called Foundations for a Better Life for adults 18 and older who are underemployed, unemployed or “at risk.” The program teaches life skills needed to become more self-sufficient and to step up to their highest potential through personal and professional development, including job training and placement.
