Regional volleyball: Scott coach gets 300th win in first round of 10th Region playoffs

Scott volleyball coach Andrea Sullivan picked up the 300th win of her career Tuesday night when the Eagles defeated Montgomery County, 25-13, 25-5, 25-6, in the first round of the 10th Region tournament at Harrison County High School.

Several of Scott’s players posted impressive statistics in the match. The team leaders were senior outside hitter Jessica Tapp with 14 kills, sophomore setter Jordan Tapp with 26 assists and sophomore outside hitter Kelly Franxman with eight kills and six defensive digs.

At the service line, sophomore Chloe Cook and senior Holly Kallmeyer had a combined total of 10 aces. Cook had 16 consecutive serves in one set.

“We served really aggressive (Tuesday), led by Chloe Cook and Holly Kallmeyer,” coach Sullivan said. “Defensively, we made the plays to be able to successfully run our offense and take care of business.”

Scott, the defending regional champion, will take a 35-3 record and 10-match winning streak into a semifinal match against Bracken County at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.  The other semifinal match will be Brossart vs. Harrison County at 6 p.m. The regional final will be played at 7 p.m. Thursday.

NewCath rallies to win five-set match against Beechwood in 9th Region

Newport Central Catholic rallied to win the last two sets and defeated Beechwood, 25-19, 23-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-7, in the final first-round match of the 9th Region volleyball tournament on Tuesday at Ryle High School.

Beechwood needed a win in the fourth set to close out the match, but NewCath came out on top to force a tie-breaker. The Thoroughbreds maintained the momentum and won the fifth set by eight points.

NewCath junior Rachel McDonald finished with a team-high 30 kills. Sophomore setter Mikah Freppon had 14 kills, 31 assists and four service aces for the Thoroughbreds

Cooper defeated Villa Madonna, 25-16, 25-13, 25-17, in the other 9th Region first-round match played Tuesday.

The leading hitters for Cooper were junior Kaity Smith with 19 kills and freshman Morgan Kelly with nine. Junior setter Taylor Klein had 22 assists and junior libero Hailey Gillispie had 15 digs for the Jaguars, who have won 10 of their last 11 matches to run their record to 23-11.

Two seniors on the Villa Madonna team capped off their high school careers in good fashion. Senior setter Gabrielle Schulte had 11 assists and senior middle hitter Emma Bateman had seven kills in their final match. The team’s defensive leader was sophomore libero Faith Cobaugh with 16 digs.

The regional semifinal matches on Wednesday’s schedule are St. Henry vs. Notre Dame at 6 p.m. and NewCath vs. Cooper at 7:30 p.m. The regional final will be played at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
