The second Boone County adult field trip went off without a hitch on Oct. 6. The group was comprised of people who had been on a waiting list since the first field trip this past spring.

The program is pretty simple. We carpooled from the parking lot of St. Timothy Parish in Union. Again, it worked out well with the number of riders and drivers. Everyone packed their lunch. We were blessed with a beautiful fall day. Temperatures were in the 70s and the sun was out.

senate11-1The first stop was the Kentucky Governor’s Mansion which is always enjoyable. The flower gardens, art work and architecture are something every Kentuckian must see. We then walked to the Capitol Rotunda with the statues of Abraham Lincoln, Henry Clay, Jefferson Davis, Alben Barkley and Ephraim McDowell. Our guide gave us an interesting history of all these great Kentuckians.

It was then onto the Kentucky Supreme Court chambers on the second floor of the Capitol, which if you have not seen it, is very impressive. Justice Michelle M. Keller, a native of Northern Kentucky, was there to greet us. She did a wonderful job explaining the judicial branch. The Senate and House chambers are being renovated so we toured the Capitol’s spectacular reception room, also on the second floor, overlooking Capitol Avenue. We had lunch on the Capitol grounds where there was some interesting food trading going on.

In the afternoon we went to the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History instead of the Old State Capitol like the first time. The center’s staff did a great job of showing Kentucky’s history since its induction in June 1792 up to the present. It’s a must visit for all Kentuckians. We were back to Boone County by 5 p.m. for supper time.

I continue to get calls from people wanting to go on the field trip so I’m planning a third one for the spring. If you would like to be placed on the waiting list, contact Lisa Smith at 502-564-8100 ext. 617.
