Too many of today’s students, particularly those in impoverished neighborhoods, do not receive the educational opportunities they need and deserve.
But how do you tackle those challenges in a way that leads to meaningful reform?
Dr. Julian Vasquez Heilig, a national expert on addressing educational injustices through community-based reforms, will deliver a keynote address and lead a community discussion on that topic during a “Think Tank” event Dec. 3-4 at Northern Kentucky University.
Heilig is a professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and director of the Doctorate in Educational Leadership at California State University Sacramento.
He is an award-winning researcher and teacher whose research focuses upon how high-stakes testing and accountability-based reforms and market reforms impact urban minority students. He also publishes the education website Cloaking Inequity.
“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Heilig to NKU and hope that the community will join us for this important conversation,” said Dr. Cindy Reed, dean of NKU’s College of Education and Human Services. “It is our hope that this event results in deliberative strategies that can help improve our community.”
The two-day event will delve into the national discussion about school reform and education policy, and discuss strategies for integrating academic scholarship and reform efforts via social media and other methods in order to improve student achievement and school success.
On Thursday, Dec. 3, Heilig will deliver a keynote address at 7 p.m. in the James C. and Rachel M. Votruba Student Union Ballroom.
On Friday, Dec. 4, he will recap that address and provide additional thoughts and strategies, setting the stage for a day of dialogue and activities focused on individual and collective actions that will address educational injustices. That event is 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
The events are free and open to the public, but registration is required.
