People in the News: NKU’s Hamblin needs your vote; honors for locals; Onkst retiring; Webbs offer BBQ


Vote for Macy Hamblin

NKU Sophomore soccer forward Macy Hamblin was selected as one of 33 finalists for the 2015 Soccer News Net College Boot award, which recognizes the women’s Division I player of the year.

Online fan voting will account for 40 percent of the award. The remaining 60 percent of the vote will be cast by the Soccer News Net editorial staff. The winner of the popular vote will receive the Soccer News Net Supporter’s Choice Award.

Fans can vote for Hamblin here and are encouraged to vote as many times as they would like through Dec. 16. The winners will be officially announced in January.

Wayne Onkst retires

Wayne Onkst, well known to Northern Kentucky as former director of the Kenton County Public Library, is retiring as State Librarian and Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives Commissioner.

Onkst, a London, Ky. native, began his 40-year library career as a shelver at the Laurel County Public Library in 1972. After completing a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Kentucky (UK) and a master’s degree in library science from the UK School of Library and Information Science, he became adult reference librarian at Kenton County Public Library in 1979 and worked his way up to director of the library in 1999.

Onkst was appointed to the position of state librarian by Governor Ernie Fletcher in 2006.

Onkst has long been recognized as a leader in the library profession. In 2010, he was awarded the UK Library School Outstanding Alumnus Award. He has also received the Mary Ann Mongan Literacy Award, the KLA Outstanding Public Library Service Award, the American Library Association Sullivan Award for Director’s Support of Children’s Service and the Children Inc. Award for Innovative Services to Children.

Physical therapist honored

Stephen Hunt, a physical therapist with Kindred at Home affiliate Gentiva Home Health-Ft. Mitchell, was honored as one of four 2015 recipients of the Paul Diaz Caring Award, presented annually to Kindred caregivers who demonstrate an extraordinary level of skill, compassion and empathy while caring for patients and residents.

Hunt, a physical therapist for 43 years – including 23 years in home health care – was nominated for the award because of his tireless efforts on behalf of his patients, especially those suffering from dementia.

He was chosen from 152 nominations and honored along with the three other recipients at Kindred’s annual Clinical Impact Symposium in Louisville.

Gateway instructors recognized

Gateway Community and Technical College instructors, Keith Lanser and Dr. Tom Sproat have been recognized for their service to two community organizations

Dr. Tom Sproat, Gateway biology instructor, was the recipient of the Clyde Hibbs Conservation Education Award “for excellence educating children, youth and/or adults on conservation issues and practices … and inspiring future generations to know and appreciate the natural world,” stated Sara R. McKillip, Robert Cooper Audubon Society President.

Dr. Sproat is also the executive director of the nonprofit organization BIOSE (Biology Integration and Outreach for Science Education) which provides life science education for k-12 students and research opportunities and professional development for teachers, www.biose.org.

Keith Lancer, Gateway service learning instructor, was recognized by the Center for Great Neighborhoods with its Heart of the Community Award “for the leadership and energy exhibited through Renaissance Covington and his long-term commitment to getting Gateway students involved in the life of the Covington Community,” said Dan Petronio, Associate Director, Center for Great Neighborhoods of Covington.

In addition to his work with Gateway students on service learning projects, Lancer also serves as Coordinator of Service Learning at Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati.

Newport Webbs open BBQ place

Webbs BBQ

Newport residents, Lesley and Joe Webb, have opened Webb’s BBQ this Friday, November 20th from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

They will be serving: pulled pork BBQ sandwiches, ribs, chicken wings, cold slaw, baked beans, mac & cheese and loaded mac & cheese.

They offer carry-out and catering.

Starting out, Webb’s BBQ will only be open on Fridays.
