Gov.-elect Matt Bevin has appointed former University of Kentucky football star, NFL standout and college athletics administrator Derrick Ramsey as his administration’s labor secretary.

“I am pleased to announce Derrick Ramsey as our next secretary of the Labor Cabinet,” Bevin was quoted as saying. “He has been successful in many arenas – both on and off the field. His passion for excellence and his superior management skills will be critical to his success in this new role. He will be a staunch advocate for Kentucky’s workers and an integral member of our team.”

The Hastings, Florida, native made history at UK, becoming the first African-American quarterback in school history. He went on to the NFL where he later helped the Oakland Raiders win the Super Bowl.

Ramsey, 58, has been serving as athletics director at Coppin State University in Baltimore. He was in the same position at Kentucky State from 1999-2003. He was the deputy commerce secretary during the administration of former Gov. Ernie Fletcher.
