Marcus Carey: ‘True believer’ sees ‘pony in there,’ senses Matt Bevin may be what he’s looking for

I spent most of my life around politics. I’ve shaken hands, slapped backs, posed for pictures, raised money, given speeches, organized rallies, stuffed mail, put up signs, made calls, walked door to door and seen the show from both sides of the curtain.

Yesterday I saw much of those same things in and around Frankfort again as Kentucky got a new governor. But I think I saw something else.

I’ve been called a “true believer” for many years. Like the boy on Christmas morning said as he gleefully went about digging through the box of horse manure his parents gave him as punishment, “I just know there’s a pony in here somewhere.”

This week I think I found something in the middle of all the pomp and poop. I sense that Matt Bevin might just be what I’ve been looking for.

He didn’t have to wade through years of political theater to become governor. He rocketed to office on the fuel of his own success, ignited by principles.

His vision encompasses a far broader horizon for Kentucky than the traditional myopia of Frankfort politicians who through years of pruning by those who advanced them come to that office with tunnel vision saddled with political debts and trained by their experiences to avoid criticism.

I have great hope that this is truly was the start of a new and better era for Kentucky.

It was certainly a fresh start, and to this true believer, that’s a far better morning than waking up to another box of traditional manure.
