Newport Central Catholic senior guard Ansley Davenport scored the 1,000th point of her high school career Wednesday while leading her team to a 62-24 win over Dayton in the quarterfinal round of the 9th Region All “A” Classic at Beechwood.
Davenport finished with a game-high 19 points and teammate Lexy Breen had 14 in the lopsided victory. The Thoroughbreds took an 18-2 lead in the first quarter and just kept pulling away.
NewCath will play Newport in a semifinal game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Newport advanced on a forfeit after Heritage withdrew from the tournament.
The other semifinal game will be Holy Cross vs. Beechwood at 6 p.m. Thursday. Holy Cross is the defending regional and state champion in the small-school playoffs.
In an 8th Region All “A” Classic semifinal game on Thursday, Walton-Verona downed Carroll County, 65-45, with seniors Morgan Simpson and Hailey Ison doing most of the scoring for the Bearcats. Simpson netted 20 points and Ison had 19.
Walton-Verona will play Trimble County in the championship final at 7 p.m. Friday at Owen County High School. Trimble County is the defending regional champion and the last time Walton-Verona won the tournament was 2012.
Three weeks ago, Walton-Verona edged Trimble County, 38-34, to hand the Raiders their first loss to the season. Both teams will enter Friday’s rematch with an 11-4 record.
