With colder temperatures upon us during these winter months, it’s important to remember some tips for proper care of your pet.
Here are some tips from the Campbell County Animal Shelter:
The best advice: keep pets inside.
Provide adequate shelter at all times; place straw in the doghouse.
Make sure your pet has a constant source of water. Water freezes quickly, so check the supply at least three times per day (thermal heaters are available).
Feed your pets extra calories. For humans and pets, it takes more energy in the winter to keep body temperature regular.
Be careful with antifreeze! It can be toxic, even if it’s just a tiny dose, and could cause kidney damage if ingested.
Keep ice melt and salt away from pets.
Do not leave your pet alone in the car. Carbon monoxide from a running engine is dangerous (a running car is also a target for thieves).
Never shave your dog down to the skin in the winter.
Remember that prolonged exposure to cold weather can lower body temperature.
Always bang on the hood of your car. Outdoor cats choose to sleep under the hood of cars for warmth, so wait a few seconds before starting your engine. This gives cats a chance to get away.
