Northern Kentucky Forum provides a look ahead to the 2016 Legislative Session with state lawmakers

January 4, 2016

The Northern Kentucky Forum will hold its first event of the New Year on Wednesday, Jan. 6, at the Campbell County Administration Building, Fiscal Court Chambers.

The annual informational forum on the Kentucky General Assembly offers an opportunity to interact with a panel of state lawmakers and hear thoughts on the key issues they’ll face during the 2016 session.

This forum will be a conversation with several of Northern Kentucky’s state legislators, moderated by John David Dyche, longtime political columnist at the Courier now writing for the opinion section at WDRB.com.

Panelists include Rep. Arnold Simpson (D), House District 65 (Kenton), Sen. Chris McDaniel (R), Senate District 23 (Kenton) and Rep. Addia Wuchner (R), House District 66 (Boone).

“A lot of important topics are going to be discussed by our legislators this year,” Northern Kentucky Forum Board Chair Carla Landon said. “Our annual focus on the General Assembly provides a wonderful opportunity for the community to be well informed.”

One major issue on the minds of many politicians heading to Frankfort in January will be the final makeup of Kentucky’s House of Representatives. Between Democratic Representatives switching parties, as well as retirements, elections for higher office and gubernatorial appointments requiring special elections, the House is potentially up for grabs. With a narrow majority, House Democrats could become the minority during the session after these elections are complete.

The makeup of the House will no doubt continue to play out through the 2016 elections in November.

The program takes place in the Campbell County Administration Building, located at 1098 Monmouth Street in Newport. Doors open at 6:15 p.m.

The Northern Kentucky Forum is a partnership of the Scripps Howard Center for Civic Engagement, Skyward and Legacy – nonpartisan groups in Northern Kentucky dedicated to public engagement.

The Forum conducts several “public square” meetings each year around current events and public policy in locations across Boone, Campbell and Kenton Counties. Forum events are free and open to the Northern Kentucky community as a whole.

I am a KY retiree and am concerned about my State Pension. I hope legislators will pay the ARC. Also I feel that the Board for KY Public Retirees has done a terrible job and should be replaced. Giving the Chairman a 25% raise is beyond the pale. When I worked at a public school as a classified employee we never got more a
than a 5% raise and most of the last years 1% or no raise.
