The Holmes girls’ basketball team remained undefeated against Northern Kentucky opponents this season with a 62-48 win over Holy Cross in the 35th District championshp game on Friday at Holy Cross.

The leading scorers for Holmes were junior guard Jaynice Stovall with 18 points and junior guard Jynea Harris with 17. They led the Bulldogs to their first district title since 2002. Last year, Holy Cross defeated Holmes in both the district and region finals.

Holmes sophomore forward Tyrah Englemon was named most valuable player on the district all-tournament team that included Harris and Stovall. Holy Cross senior Dajah McClendon, who scored 18 points in the district final, was also an all-tournament selection.

Both district finalists will compete in next week’s 9th Region tournament at BB&T Arena on the Northern Kentucky University campus. The draw to decide first-round pairings is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday.

DIXIE HEIGHTS 59, ST. HENRY 29 — Junior forward Brooke Davis made two 3-point shots in the first quarter and went on score 14 points to lead Dixie Heights to the victory in the 34th District championship game at Dixie Heights.

Davis was named most valuable player on the district all-tournament team. Her two 3-point goals sparked a fast start by the Colonels, who jumped ahead 12-2 in the first quarter and maintained a dougle-digit lead for most of the game.

In the third quarter, Dixie Heights freshman guard Grace Perry scored six of her 12 points on two plays where she was fouled while making a basket and then converted the free throw.

Both teams advance to next week’s 9th Region tournament at NKU. The draw to decide first-round pairings is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday.

  1. You named four of the all-tournament selections in the 35th but left out three players. All of the girls deserve recognition for their outstanding play. Joining Englemon, Stovall and Harris of Holmes and McClendon of Holy Cross on the all-tournament team were Zyah Beal of Holy Cross, Ally Johnson of Beechwood and Kennedy Baugh of Notre Dame, I believe.
