Wurschmidt will step into the interim position next month, following the March 11 exit of current Executive Director David Rager, who announced in January he would be leaving Northern Kentucky’s wastewater and storm water utility to pursue another opportunity.

Wurschmidt served as SD1’s interim executive director once before in 2011, prior to Rager joining SD1 in 2012.

SD1 is responsible for the collection and treatment of Northern Kentucky’s wastewater, as well as regional storm water management. SD1 is the second largest public sewer utility in Kentucky, serving more than 290,000 residents throughout Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties.

Wurschmidt joined SD1 in 1997 and was appointed deputy executive director of engineering in 2005. Prior to his time at SD1, he worked in the private sector for consulting engineers Arcadis (formerly Malcolm Pirnie, Inc.), and Franklin Consultants, Inc.

He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from The Ohio State University, is a registered professional engineer in Kentucky and Ohio and is a Board Certified Environmental Engineer through the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. He also is a member of the Water Environment Federation, the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers and the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA).

“With prior experience serving as SD1’s interim executive director, Mark is an obvious choice for guiding the utility in the coming months as we search for a permanent executive director,” said Adam Chaney, president of the SD1 Board of Directors. “After nearly 20 years serving Northern Kentucky through SD1, he is well-versed in the challenges facing the diverse communities we serve, and he is committed to SD1’s mission of protecting public health and supporting the community’s economic vitality.”

In the effort to identify a permanent executive director, the board is accepting applications for the position. Details about the open position and application process will be posted at www.sd1.org/employment.aspx by the end of this week.

SD1 maintains approximately 1,600 miles of sanitary sewer system pipeline, 135 wastewater pumping stations, 16 flood pump stations, eight package treatment plants, three major wastewater treatment plants, 450 miles of storm sewer system and 32,500 storm sewer structures.
