Congressman Andy Barr and Senator Mitch McConnell released statements expressing sympathy to the families of Stephanie and Justin Shults who have been identified as casualties in the deadly blasts in Brussels.
Stephanie Shults, 29, of Lexington and her husband, Justin, had been unaccounted for in the wake of the blasts last week. Justin, 30, is originally from Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
The couple moved to Brussels in 2014. Both are accountants.
“We are heartbroken to learn that Stephanie and Justin Shults are among the many lives cut short as a result of the barbaric terrorist attacks in Brussels, Belgium,” Barr said in a statement. “We will never forget this daughter of Kentucky, the anguish felt by her family, nor the evil that took her from us. Through this tragedy, we stand more resolved than ever to confront and defeat the enemies of freedom, tolerance, and civilized society.
“Carol and I offer our deepest sympathies to the Shults and Moore families, their loved ones, and their many friends. As the parents of two daughters, we extend our heartfelt thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

McConnell said, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Stephanie and Justin Shults in the horrifying terrorist attacks in Brussels. Elaine and I join all Kentuckians in sending our condolences to the couple’s families at this difficult time.”
The Shults were reportedly on their way back to their parked car after dropping off Stephanie’s mother at the airport. The mother was headed to security when the blast happened.
At least eight Americans were believe injured in the attacks.
