The day after voters in Ohio and Florida take to the polls to cast their ballots for the Republican and Democratic nominees, Northern Kentucky University will host a national political expert and neuroscientist.
Sam Wang’s data-centered approach to the study of elections has correctly predicted election results since 2004.
Wang is a professor of neuroscience and molecular biology at Princeton University, where his work focuses upon the neurobiology of learning and the statistical analysis of brain imaging data.
He has also developed statistical methods to analyze U.S. presidential election polls with unusually high accuracy. In the 2012 presidential election, Wang predicted the exact tally of the Electoral College results and nearly predicted the popular vote results. He also correctly predicted the result of every U.S. Senate race in the nation.
His work has been featured in national media outlets such as the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and National Public Radio.
Wang will share his experience predicting election results, discuss how data can be applied to the study of politics, and discuss how the winner-take-all “Titanic Tuesday” elections in Ohio and Florida might affect the presidential primary landscape.
He will also discuss how statistical analysis can play an active role in combating partisan gerrymandering, a topic currently before the U.S. Supreme Court.
“Who Needs Pundits and Pollsters? With Dr. Sam Wang” takes place from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 16 at the George and Ellen Rieveschl Digitorium in NKU’s Griffin Hall.
The lecture is free and open to the public, but registration is requested. The College of Informatics Tenth Anniversary Distinguished Speaker event is part of the college’s yearlong anniversary celebration.
