NCAA Public Recognition Award for academic excellence goes to NKU women’s basketball squad

The Northern Kentucky University women’s basketball team was one of 13 Horizon League squads across all sports recognized for its academic excellence with the NCAA’s Public Recognition Award.

The Norse posted a multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) score in the top 10 percent of all Division I squads for the period culminating in the 2014-15 academic year.

“I am tremendously proud of our young ladies for their commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the court during this transition period,” said head coach Dawn Plitzuweit. “This APR recognition is also evidence of the value that our entire staff places on education. I want to thank our coaches, our academic advisors, and all of the incredible professors here at NKU for the guidance that they provide to our student-athletes. I truly appreciate the efforts of so many individuals to receive this type of recognition for our program and our athletic department.”

The APR measure eligibility, graduation and retention each term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores beginning in the 2011-12 academic year and ending in 2014-15.

The Norse were the only Horizon League basketball team so honored, and have taken the award in each of the last two seasons. Valparaiso and Cleveland had four different teams take awards, while Green Bay added two.
