Keynote addresses from Governor Matt Bevin, Lt. Governor Jenean Hampton, Labor Secretary Derrick Ramsey, and Assistant U.S. Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health, Dr. David Michaels, will highlight the 32nd annual Governor’s Safety and Health Conference and Exposition – the 32nd annual, and largest gathering of occupational safety and health professionals in the state.
Co-hosted by the Kentucky Safety and Health Network (KSHN) and the Labor Cabinet, the conference brings together representatives of the business, education, government and labor sectors with the goal of increasing health and safety awareness in workplaces across Kentucky.
“Assembling the top workplace safety leaders from across the state each year provides us the opportunity to collaborate on best practices needed to keep employees safe,” Sec. Ramsey said. “I am delighted that Governor Bevin and Lt. Governor Hampton will be on hand to recognize the hard work that these men and women do every day to make sure that workplaces across the Commonwealth are safe and productive.”

Founded in 1985, the KSHN is a nonprofit, membership-based organization that has co-hosted the Governor’s Safety and Health Conference and Exposition with the Labor Cabinet. Each year, KSHN provides scholarships to eligible undergraduate and graduate college students. The scholarships are referred to as the Scholastic Achievement for Education Awards or “SAFE” Awards and are partially funded through a silent auction held during the conference. Since 2005, $320,000 in SAFE Awards has been distributed.
This year’s conference will feature courses on topics such as fall prevention, fire prevention, first aid/CPR, and workers compensation, among others. There will also be tours of the Kentucky Truck Plant and UPS Worldport facilities. Business representatives from more than 40 companies from across Kentucky will be on hand to accept the Governor’s Safety and Health Award, which honors outstanding safety and health performance. There will also be opportunities for occupational safety and health professionals to network and the conference will culminate with the Governor’s Banquet on May 12, which features Gov. Bevin as the keynote speaker.
“We are pleased to feature expanded technical training, certification classes, and workshops for this year’s conference,” said KSHN President Randy Houston. “The OSHA 511 and 10-Hour courses will be in high demand and we look forward to the valuable educational opportunities they will provide to our attendees.”

Coming on the heels of the legislature’s vote to cut safety regs and the death of the miner in Harlan, this seems a bit ironic.
