Duke Energy helped make Mary E. Smith Memorial Cemetery shine during one of their Energy in Action volunteer events recently.
Forty employees and contractors teamed together to help spruce up the park so it would be ready for the upcoming “A Tribute To Our Veterans” ceremony on Memorial Day.
“We believe in giving back to the communities we serve,” says Rhonda Whitaker, Duke Energy Community Relations Manager for Kentucky. “Our employee volunteers helped create a memorial sitting area — a quiet place for visitors to relax, reflect, and reminisce.”
Volunteers helped with mulching, landscaping, tree trimming, flower planting, as well as repairing a broken fence as part of their volunteer day held May 18.
“The Board is appreciative of the work that was done, along with the support of the City of Elsmere, the Elsmere Fire District, and First Baptist Church of Elsmere and its members for their kindness and thoughtfulness,” said Vanda Langham, president, Mary E. Smith Cemetery Board. “Memorial Day weekend is one of our biggest times for visitors.”
Members of the Duke Energy crew included employees from Duke Energy’s Veterans Network.
“There are volunteer projects throughout the year at Duke Energy, but this one stood out to me because our work will help recognize the contributions of veterans and military service members,” says Elmer Bullock Jr., who served as a Petty Officer, 3rd class, Boiler Technician in the Navy.
Duke Energy Ohio/Kentucky’s operations provide electric service to about 840,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in a 3,000-square-mile service area and natural gas service to approximately 525,000 customers.
