A short film produced by Northern Kentucky University students took first place in the 11th annual College Movie Festival, the competition and celebration of student filmmaking in the Greater Cincinnati region.

Programming, produced by undergraduate students in NKU’s Electronic Media and Broadcasting program, features a sci-fi plot in which an android is brought to life in a lab – and then has some surprisingly human interactions with her creators. It was filmed at NKU’s Center for Applied Informatics.

The professional filmmakers who judged the competition praised Programming for its production value and said the film, which clocked in at just under five minutes, left them wanting more.

It received the Judges’ Choice Award, Best Preproduction, and Audience Choice Runner-Up for Group B at a screening event held April 23 at the AMC Theatre in West Chester, Ohio. Another NKU-produced film, Nakumu & Me, also won Audience Choice for Group A.

“Each year, the College Movie Festival entries improve in quality. Our student filmmakers rose to the challenge and created a film that combined solid filmmaking technique to enhance the artistic aspirations and story. We are very proud of their efforts, and of all of our teams – each of which was in the mix for recognition,” said Chris Strobel, Professor and Director of Electronic Media & Broadcasting.

NKU has participated in the College Movie Festival each year since its inception in 2006, and Strobel co-founded the event. This is the fifth time an NKU team has won.

Sixteen filmmaking teams, including five from NKU, participated in the 2016 College Movie Festival. The teams were required to adhere to six guidelines: feature a character named Leslie Millstone, a personal trainer; feature the line, “Just Google it.”; use a thermos as a prop; adhere to a randomly selected theme; have a rating no higher than PG-13; and have a runtime of seven minutes or less.

The winning team, named “Medium Rare,” included:

Directors: David Campbell and Andrea Hubrich
Writers: Jessica McGinnis and Nate Ryan
