Big Bone Lick State Historic Site in Union to host Native American Inter-tribal Weekend in July


Big Bone Lick State Historic Site will host a Native American Inter-Tribal Weekend July 16-17.

Co-hosted by the Deer Valley Inter-Tribal Learning Circle, the weekend is dedicated to celebrating the Native American cultures of the Northern Kentucky region. There will be a Native American encampment, several demonstrations and two traditional Drums.

Big Bone Lick State Historic Site is located at 3380 Beaver Road in Union.

Authentic demonstrations will include: flint knapping, weaving, beadwork, rope making, primitive fire starting, cooking, traditional storytelling and more. The celebration runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Admission is $2 per person and children ages 5 and under are free (cash only).

Big Bone Lick is a virtual Ice Age showcase and is regarded as the birthplace of American vertebrate paleontology.

In addition to the new exhibits featured in the museum and visitor center, the park is also home to a campground that was recently selected as one of Kentucky’s top five. It also offers hiking and nature study trails, annual special events including the Salt Festival, now in its 31st year, and seasonal recreational activities and interpreter-led programs.
