Four seniors on Highlands softball team end their careers at state tournament

The Highlands fast-pitch softball team lost back-to-back games in the state tournament on Friday to finish the season with a 24-12 record.

After an 8-5 loss to Daviess County in the quarterfinals, Highlands dropped to the losers bracket and lost to McCracken County, 6-2, at Jack Fischer Park in Owensboro.

Four seniors in the Bluebirds’ starting lineup ended their high school careers at the state tournament. The team’s leading hitters were senior first baseman Brennah Dutcher and senior shortstop Haley Coffey, who both had five hits in three games. Coffey also scored four runs to give her a season total of 43.

Senior catcher Shelby Graybill was 3-for-10 at the plate and finished the season with a .455 batting average (46 of 101). Senior pitcher Bailey Spencer ended up with a 22-9 record.

The Bluebirds compiled a 93-46 record and made two trips to the state tournament while those four seniors were in the program.
