Kentucky Symphony Orchestra has fun summer season in store for Devou Park — come sing-along


The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra continues a nearly 80-year tradition of fun, family-gatherings at the concert bowl in Covington’s Devou Park.

The KSO began its annual summer series of concerts in 1995.

This summer’s programs extend the KSO’s efforts to enlighten, entertain and educate through great music and nostalgia.

Over the course of the three programs the KSO will perform 48 selections that will have crowds dancing, clapping and singing along.

Here’s the line-up:

Pop Fitty (5 Decades of Pop — from The Beatles to Bruno Mars)
7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 9

Those who have actively listened to and purchased music for the last 50 years, have heard and seen hundreds of artists come and go in all genres (Pop, Rock, Country, R&B, Latin, Disco, Soul etc).

The KSO has all generations (as well as genres) covered so be ready to dance and sing along. (The KY Governor Scholars are back this year for the first time since 2001).

Love Shack, Smooth, We Are Family, Puff the Magic Dragon, Uptown Funk and many more.

“Catching the Sun” 7:30 p.m. Sat., August 6

Smooth and crossover jazz from the 1970s and 80s had a feel good vibe that became a sort of soundtrack for the times. The KSO’s musical archeologist digs to unearth gems by Chuck Mangione, Spyro Gyra, Eumir Deodato and Chick Corea

Straussing Out 7:30 p.m. Sat., September 3, 2016

The KSO preps for its 25th season with a Viennese New Year-style celebration with music by the family von Strauss. There will be choirs, cartoons, gunfire, musical saw, singing, dancing and audience participation. Those Austrians can party!

Sample Program: Die Fledermaus selections, At the Hunt, Blue Danube, Jockey Polka, Voices of Spring, Homage to Queen Victoria of Great Britain (U.S. outdoor premiere — The KSO had the U.S. premiere of this piece too in 1992), plus many more.

Restrooms and concessions are available on-site. Bring blankets or lawn chairs.

The TANK Shuttle from Covington Catholic to the band shell runs from 6-7:30 p.m. and after the concert for $1 each way. Free parking in the park (though limited).
