Adventure races are multi-disciplinary events including some form of mountain biking, trekking/running and paddling. The races involve navigation over unmarked wilderness courses, so good navigation with a topographical map and compass are essential for team performance. All races are open to soloists and teams of two, three or four.

The series, held in partnership with 361 Adventures and the Kentucky State Park Foundation, consists of three adventure races. The Carter Caves race is scheduled to last about six hours.

The Aug. 13 race at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park is scheduled for eight hours. The Nov. 5 race at Natural Bridge State Resort Park, known as “The Fig,” is set for 12 hours.

The Fig is a qualifying race for the United State Adventure Racing Association’s national championship.

New in 2016 is the Unbridled Friends & Family Series, which are shorter format races intended to introduce beginners to the sport of adventure racing.

Division winners (solo, co-ed, and open) will receive awards, and top overall finishers will be awarded cash prizes.
