Pavement replacement project begins tonight on NKY interstates; will impact traffic until November

Beginning Friday night, June 3 (tonight) at 10 p.m. significant lane restrictions will be in place throughout the weekend on SB I-71/I-75.

The restrictions will occur between the 189 mile-marker (KY 1072 – Kyles Lane) and the 184 mile-marker (KY 236 – Donaldson Road).

The weekend work will involve shifting lanes over on the southbound side so that a contraflow lane can be built for the upcoming northbound pavement replacement project. This weekend work will have major impacts to southbound travel time.

Motorists are encouraged to find alternate southbound routes while this work is in progress.

Drivers should exercise extreme caution and watch for traffic control devices, flaggers, construction personnel and equipment entering and leaving the work zone.

The southbound direction is expected to be reopened to the normal number of lanes by 5 a.m. Monday morning, June 6.  Off-peak single lane closures will occur on SB I-71/I-75 throughout the remainder of the June 6th week.  Work is weather dependent.

I-275 eastbound (Exit 84)

Lane restrictions may be encountered on eastbound I-275 at the exit to I-71/I-75 (Exit 84) between 10 p.m. June 3 tonight and 5 a.m. June 6.  Lane restrictions may extend throughout the length of the ramp entering NB I-71/I-75.

Delays can be expected when restrictions are in place.

Original press release for this project

Construction crews will begin a major pavement replacement project on I-71/I-75 in Kenton County on June 3.

“The northbound pavement section beginning at the I-275 interchange in Erlanger extending north just before the US 25 (Dixie Highway) interchange will be removed and replaced with new concrete,” said Rob Hans, Chief District Engineer for Department of Highways District 6, in Covington, “This section of roadway will be replaced to provide a safer and smoother ride for all those who travel on the I-71/I-75 interstate.”

This project is similar to the Revive the Drive projects that took place in 2010 – 2012 on several Northern Kentucky interstates.  This project will remove old concrete on 2.2 miles of northbound lanes starting at the I-275 interchange to just before the US 25 (Dixie Highway).

For most of the project northbound direction be reduced to two lanes.

In order to alleviate some of the issues caused by this configuration, a third northbound lane will be provided on the shoulder of the southbound lanes. The contraflow lane, as it’s called, on the southbound shoulder will be protected by concrete barrier wall on both sides.

Traffic in the contraflow lane will not be able to exit the highway.  This configuration will not impact southbound traffic as the normal number of southbound lanes will be provided in a shifted configuration. The contraflow configuration is expected to last approximately 85 calendar days.

“This work will have major impacts to travel times; we are asking commuters to find alternate ways to travel and, if possible, avoid this work zone altogether,” said Hans.

Contractors plan to work around the clock to remove deteriorated concrete from three lanes and shoulders.  This project includes joint replacements on four bridges.

The I-275 westbound to I-71/I-75 northbound ramp, the Buttermilk Pike Exit 186 and entrance ramps will also receive new pavement.  To allow this work to be done, some closures of ramps will be needed.

Also to be noted, the KY 236 (Donaldson Road) entrance ramp to I-71/I-75 northbound will have an extensive closure period.  Message boards will be in place to notify the motoring public of when the ramp closures will begin.

More than 77,000 vehicles daily use this section of I-71/I-75 northbound.

Eaton Asphalt Paving Co. Inc. and Subsidiary was awarded the $15.1 million contract for this project.

The completion date for the project is November 2016.
