Staff report
Reports filed with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance, as required by law, show that incumbent Covington Mayor Sherry Carran outspent challenger Joe Meyer by nearly double in the May primary.
Meyer took top spot in the voting, however, by more than 300 votes. Meyer had 47 percent of all votes cast compared to Carran’s 40 percent.

The two top voter-getters from the field of four advanced to the general election.
The details in the reports reveal that Carran’s race was largely self-funded while Meyer raised more money and carried more over to the general election.
Carran personally gave her campaign over $25,000 and raised about $5800, most in contributions under $200.
The records show 25 contributions from 23 individuals. Only one, $1000 from Charles Killian of Covington, met the maximum contribution allowed.
Meyer loaned his campaign $8000 and raised $40,624 from 77 contributions by 69 individuals or organizations.
Twenty of those contributors met the $1000 maximum allowed in the primary: William Butler, Michael Coppage, Covington Professional Firefighters Local 38, Alex Edmondson, Steve Frank, and Stephen Kelly of Covington; David Cain of Independence, Michael Dempsey of Edgewood, Ironworkers Local 410 Political Action Fund of Washington, D.C., John Kenkel of Union, Richard Kennedy of Fort Wright; Tony Motley of Latonia, Joe Nienaber of Ft. Wright, Political Housing Club of Northern Kentucky, Erlanger; Nathan Smith of Ft. Mitchell; Alice Sparks of Ft. Mitchell, Matth Toebben of Crescent Springs and James Wigger, Amy Fischer and Greg Fischer of Villa Hills.
