Kenton County to recognize 40 years of parks and 20 years of recreation with celebration at Middleton-Mills


Come and celebrate the great parks history in Kenton County at the 40/20 Celebration.

The event is being held Sunday, July 17 at Middleton-Mills Park from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. and the general public is invited to the free celebration.

Middleton Mills ParkThe county’s first parks, Pioneer Park and Richardson Road Park, opened in 1976. Lincoln Ridge, Middleton-Mills, and Doe Run Lake parks came along in the years following.

In 1996, the Recreation program was launched and has since included a number of successful, award winning programs.

There will be musical entertainment featuring The Hills of Kentucky, members of NKY Unplugged, and The Rumored. Dominach’s Taekwondo Academy will provide a water slide from 2-5 p.m. to play and cool off, so remember to bring a swim suit.

Mr. Cowpie will also be entertaining with his antics and party animals from 2:30-3:30 p.m.

Colonial Cottage will be grilling favorites and Culver’s will provide its frozen custard treats. Boone County Parks will have a soft drinks stand in operation, as well.

Guests can bring their own picnic or make their picnic purchase on site.

Middleton-Mills Park is located at 3415 Mills Rd., Covington.

Directions: from I-275, take Exit 79 (Covington-Taylor Mill) and drive seven miles south on KY Hwy 16 to Mills Road. Turn left on Mills Road and drive about one mile to the park. The 40/20 Celebration will take place in Shelterhouse 2.

  1. Hopefully they will also be honoring Parks Director Steve Trauger who is retiring soon. Steve has been a driving force and advocate for Kenton County’s Parks and will be sorely missed. Wild Wednesday’s, his brainchild, has been an award winning success for many years now. Every program is packed full. His nest box monitoring program is now linked to Cornell University, with many citizen scientists participating. Can’t say enough good things about Steve and his contributions to Kenton County Parks and Northern Kentucky over the years.
