It’s never too early for undergrads to get involved in research.
Take Zach Anderson, a UK senior who is bringing wearable technology into the OR to reduce doctor distractions.
Anderson started this project his freshman year, under mentor Brent Seales in the UK College of Engineering. He credits Seales with inspiring him to persevere and attack tough problems from multiple angles.
“Usually, when you think about computer science, you just think about coding,” Anderson said. You don’t think about a surgeon in the operating room. “But to be able to say that I was able to build an application to where it could potentially save someone’s life because doctors are able to see vital signs without looking across the room—it was really cool,” he said.
Working with Dr. Alex Gandsas of the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Maryland, Anderson built the programs needed to connect a computer to an anesthesia machine and Google Glass technology. In May, after a series of tests, the team deployed their technology for surgery for the first time.
