This summer, the Regional Tourism Network (RTN) sent representatives along with “flying” pigs on an initiative called “Piggy Pop-Up” in target markets of Indianapolis, Louisville and Toledo.
While using the tagline “…because anything is possible where pigs fly” as inspiration, and the hashtag #SUMMERinCINCY, the RTN promoted the Cincinnati USA region as a great place to visit.
Piggy Pop-Up traveled to Indy Criterium, a Louisville Bats game and a Toledo Mud Hens game throughout the month of July. At these events, the RTN engaged with potential visitors to spread the word about all the fun to be had during #SUMMERinCINCY. And what better way to encourage engagement and social media sharing than with adorable winged “flying” pigs?!
The whimsical winged pigs pay loose homage to the region’s nickname of Porkopolis in the 1800s and now serve as inspiration that “anything is possible where pigs fly”– including a memorable vacation you won’t soon forget.
“Our objective was to directly engage with potential visitors in person and via social media to generate awareness of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky as a premier leisure travel destination,” said Linda Antus, president and CEO of the Regional Tourism Network. “When developing this campaign, it was important for us to choose a theme that would be a catalyst for not only conversation and curiosity about Cincinnati USA, but that would also be inspiring.”
A social media component geared towards both visitors and residents provided additional engagement opportunities. Through August 31, anyone is encouraged to take a photo in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky and post it on Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #SUMMERinCINCY to be automatically entered to win prizes valued up to $100. Prizes include items like tickets to Cincinnati Ballet performances and local restaurants.
Piggy Pop-Up proved to be a fun, interactive and sharable on-the-ground initiative. Through July, the successful campaign has generated 1,029,206 impressions and a value of $65,105.94 in earned local and regional media coverage as well as more than 170,000 impressions across Twitter and Facebook.
