Kentucky Humanities Council offers travel grants to KY Book Fair — schools should apply by Aug. 31


Registration is open for the Kentucky Humanities Council’s Kids Day at the Kentucky Book Fair, which features programs for students in grades 3-12 on Nov. 4 at Frankfort Convention Center.

Separate programs will be held for students in grades 3-8 and in grades 9-12. Programs for both grade groups are free, but advance registration is required.

Ten travel grants of $300 each are also available for schools that need travel assistance. The deadline to apply for a travel grant is Aug. 31.

Grades 3-8

Students will enjoy interactive activities with authors, as well as time for lunch and book shopping. Five age-appropriate tracks feature programs on a variety of topics. Thirty-two authors of books for children and young adults are scheduled to attend, and there will be costumed characters and sessions for classes to attend.

Grades 9-12

Students in writing, journalism, current events and English classes can participate in a master class in which they will meet with Maria Henson, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and professor of journalism at Wake Forest University.

Students should read from Henson’s prize-winning editorial series and are encouraged to participate in an essay contest prior to the event.

Students also can meet other authors and shop for their books.
