Conner’s football team got the job done on defense once again and defeated Newport Central Catholic, 27-14, on Saturday to post its third straight victory.
The Cougars, who held their two previous opponents to eight points, recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter against NewCath to come away with the win that boosted their record to 4-1.
Conner finished with a 389-303 advantage in total yards. The Cougars had 195 yards rushing and 194 yards passing with senior quarterback Walker Buelow throwing two touchdown passes to Matt Simpson and one to Brian Manning.
Simpson caught six passes for 109 yards in the game. Conner’s leading rusher was Armand Jackson, who picked up 134 yards on 13 carries.
NewCath senior quarterback Pat Henschen completed 11 of 21 pass for 159 yards, but he lost the ball on a fumble and pass interception in the fourth quarter. Sophomore running back Kyle Kelley had 113 yards on 20 carries for the Thoroughbreds.
