Northern Kentucky University’s Six@Six series begins in October with look at Larry Flynt’s history

September 28, 2016

The seventh season of Northern Kentucky University’s Six@Six community lecture series begins in October.

nku-logoThe series offers a little something for everyone: from race relations in America and the growth of the local refugee community, to whether smartphones are putting privacy at risk and if Larry Flynt is a First Amendment hero.

Presented by NKU’s Scripps Howard Center for Civic Engagement since 2010, Six@Six provides a series of interactive lectures that connect community members with national and faculty experts to discuss topics of national and local interest.

The series runs October-April.

“For the seventh year of our Six@Six series, we are proud to connect the community with the expertise on our campus like never before,” said Mark Neikirk, director of NKU’s Scripps Howard Center for Civic Engagement. “This year’s lectures spotlight faculty experts and outstanding students from each of our six colleges, along with experts from across the nation and our region.”

The season begins on Wednesday, Oct. 5 with “Larry Flynt: Smut Peddler or Constitutional Hero?”

Chase College of Law associate professor Jennifer Kinsley will examine Flynt’s history and connections in Greater Cincinnati, as well as the impact his carefully-chosen legal battles had upon the legal and cultural landscape. The event will be held at The Carnegie in Covington.

Future topics include:

  • Privacy and Risk in the Digital Age; Thursday, Oct. 27
  • Nursing in Tanzania: A Multicultural Experience; Tuesday, Nov. 15
  • Is Justice Blind?: Race, Class, and Our Criminal Justice System; Wednesday, Feb. 22
  • Race in America: Then and Now; Thursday, March 16
  • On Being a Refugee in America: From Somali to Northern Kentucky; Thursday, April 6
  • Taking Down the Lion: The Rise and Fall of Dennis Kozlowski; Tuesday, April 25

The interactive community lectures are sponsored by NKU’s Scripps Howard Center for Civic Engagement. The cost is $6 per lecture, or $30 for the entire season. Students are admitted free.
