Fatal accident on I-75 in Florence Sunday; Glencoe man struck and killed while standing in roadway


The Florence Police Department has released details of a fatal accident that occurred on Interstate-75, at the 178 mile marker early Sunday morning.

florence-pd-logoJames Lutz of Glencoe, Kentucky was killed when he was struck by a van driven by Schawanna Jones of Covington. Police say Lutz and Cynthia Gooch of Erlanger were standing on the side of the roadway, possibly working on their car when the van left the roadway and struck both of them.

Lutz was pronounced dead on the scene.

Gooch and Jones were both taken to UC Medical Center with serious injuries. There is no additional information regarding their condition.

The accident is under investigation and police say alcohol may have been a factor.

The Florence Police Department issued the following statement regarding the incident

On 10/30/16 at 0545 hours, the Florence Police Department received a report of an accident with serious injuries at the 178 mile marker on I75 southbound.  Through investigation, it was discovered that James Lutz of Glencoe, KY and Cynthia Gooch of Erlanger, KY were standing on the side of the roadway, possibly working on their 2002 Toyota Tundra. 

A 2008 Chrysler Town and Country van, being driven by Schawanna Jones of Covington, KY, was heading south on I75. The van left the roadway and struck the truck and pedestrians.

Mr. Lutz was pronounced dead at the scene.  Ms. Gooch and Ms. Jones were both taken to the University of Cincinnati Hospital with serious injuries.  The accident is under investigation and alcohol may have been a contributing factor. There have not been any charges filed at this time but may be in the future.
